On inspiration and innovation....

On inspiration and innovation....

My career training is in academia, in psychology research. And in research, before you can publish a ground-breaking study or establish a theory, you have to do research on all the work that has come before you. You have to read and understand it, see where there are holes or questions left to be answered, and have a spark that leads to how you will find the answer to that question in an innovative way. In academic papers, you need to lay out the justification for your study, citing each and every source that builds up the foundation of your work. Anything less than that is plagiarism, intellectual theft. .

I’ve been thinking a lot about inspiration recently; where it comes from and what it really means to be “inspired” by something, especially as a content creator in the digital age. Is it enough to see something, and be “inspired” to make a replication, with no attribution to the original source? To read an article and a caption and rephrase it in your own words, with your own photo? Or is real inspiration to read or consume something, and then use that spark to move yourself and your ideas forward; to digest it, analyze it, *feel* something, and then progress to make something new and different, while acknowledging the source material. A while back, I read the book “steal like an artist” by @austinkleon, and I think the points Austin makes highlight some of my frustration with instagram recently. I’ve noticed an increasing amount of “bad theft”, of rip-offs and replications from the work of creators I love and admire; scrolling through instagram and not even recognizing whose content is whose. It’s discouraging, and disappointing. It’s also a great starting point and challenge for myself to be a better creator, a better writer. To commit to honesty in my inspirations and source materials, and to always lift up those who are innovating and creating and hustling with me.
