This past weekend,I joined my family down in Florida to celebrate my Grandmother’s life. I was honored to have the chance to give one of the eulogies. While I was thinking about what to say, I realized just how much Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t just affect the memory of the person who has it. For me, anyway, experiencing Grandma’s loss of memory, her sparkling wit, and speech stole my memories too. Sort of like water bleeding ink on a page, the sharp, solid memory of my grandmother is faded, soft around the edges. Some areas feel washed away all together, while memories that remain are tinged with a kind of elongated, chronic grief.
I know those memories will come back with time, but right now, I want to do something to focus on the positives. To do something in my grandparent’s honor, to make someone else’s life better. I did some math on the flight home, and decided that starting today I’ll be working to raise $50,000 over the next six months to support #TheWomensAlzheimersMovement and the care facility that supported our family. My goal is twofold; One, to do something that advances research- of the ten leading causes of death in the US, Alzheimer’s is the only one that has no treatment or course of action. Two; to make other people’s burden of this disease somewhat lighter- costs for care far exceed other terminal diseases, costing on average more than $250k per person over the last five years of their life.
$50k is a big number - it’s scary for me to put out there. But it’s also the same as if everyone who follows this page donates $2.50. If half of you donate $5.00. If a quarter of you donate $10.00. If a few of the brands that have found value in what I create here can see the value of the change I want to make offline. It feels like ambitious, optimistic thinking. But if the past three years on instagram with you all have taught me anything, it’s that that’s the kind of people who follow this account. That’s the kind of brands that I have been lucky enough to work with. And more than anything, that’s the kind of influence I want to have. 💗 #coffeeandcardioforALZ
